Tip 8 - Making Good Eye Contact with the Camera

When we see a portrait, we look at the eyes before anything else. Photos that draw us in, keep us interested, and allow us to look leisurely over the picture are those where we connect with the eyes of the person in the photo.

Top tips for natural looking eye contact in portraits

  • Eye contact with the camera is a must
  • Think of a laugh out loud, side splitting episode in you life
  • Try laughing with your eyes
  • Relax and ever so slightly squint with you lower eye lids

A tried and trusted technique is to look slightly above the camera lens - focus on the logo on top of the camera. We suggest you try and laugh with your eyes. A good way to achieve this effect is to squint ever so slightly with your lower eye lids only. Don't over do the squinting unless you want to look like Clint Eastwood ready for a shoot out.

It can also help to think of something hilarious in your life or imagine a funny situation, such as everybody turning up for work completely naked.
